I recently was made aware of the "Detail Preserving Upscale" filter / effect in After Effects CC.

 

This effect allows you to zoom in on your shot without losing too much detail & resolution.

 

I think this effect is best served with 4K footage shot at 10,12, and 16bit resolution. 

 

But this technique will still provide pretty good results with 1080p 8 bit footage.
